Can we implement Pivot Tables using MSRS?

Can we implement Pivot Tables using Reporting Services 2005? I need to
allow user to select the pivot column at runtime. I mean dynamically
changing the criteria for pivot tables after report is rendered.
Thanks,
YogeshHi,
You can implement pivoting using matrix.

Can we encrypt a report in reporting services?

Can we encrypt a report in reporting services?

thanks in advance

Hi Chandra,

At what point do you want to encrypt the report? The actual renderered report? The report definition? The data that makes up the report?

Reporting Services does not have special encryption for a renderered report. Instead, the technologies that RS uses have built in encryption. SQL Server, IIS with SSL, File shares where a report may be stored, encrypted email, etc...

|||

That is fine brad and thanks for the update.

But what is that msdn2 talks at Initializing a Report Server (http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms157133.aspx) is it report server database encryption? How does that helps some one looking for reports encryption?

could you explain that?

thanks

Can we do Even Programming in MS SQL 2005 Reporting Services ?

Hi,

Can anyone help me in this ?

Can we do event drive Programming things only in SQL 2005 Reporting Services without using VB.net ?

I want that on mouse move event or on focus on some particular cell of table or matrix a hidden picture or graph is visible.

I am using DUNDA's Plugins in my report.

Can anyone tell me how i can do this ?

RS_DBA

Do you have Visual Studio 2005? You can do event driven programming with that and use the report viewer to show your SQL reports. It allows you to easily create a front end for you reports.|||

Hi,

This is my limitation i have to use only SQL 2005 reporting service.

can we deploy RDL files into report server without using web services through .Net

how can we deploy the reports into report server with out using web services from .Net. Is it possible.

Hi vidya
It is possible, after the initial deployment and folders were created. You could do the following:
Browse to your reportserver. Normally [server]/reports
Browse to the report and click on it. Select the report's 'Properities' Tab. Under the heading 'Report Definition' are 2 options 'Edit' and 'Update'. Use the 'Update' to upload the new rdl file. This will deploy a new version.
Hope this helps

Can we create two servicess in a same database?

Hi,

I tried creating two services in a same queue but i couldnt see them working properly. Now i got a primary doubt that can i create two services which communicate with each other in a same database? Please help me....

here is the script which i used to create the services

/************************************Scipt *********************************/

/********************** Sender Queue and Service ***********************/

CREATE QUEUE SenderQueue WITH Status = ON;

CREATE CONTRACT SenderContract

(

ArchivingMessage SENT BY INITIATOR

);

CREATE SERVICE SenderService

ON QUEUE SenderQueue(SenderContract);

/********************** Receiver Service ***********************/

ALTER PROCEDURE pArchiveMessageHandler

AS

BEGIN

DECLARE @.V_Message AS NVARCHAR(1000);

DECLARE @.V_Handle AS UNIQUEIDENTIFIER;

INSERT INTO TestServiceBroker VALUES('Starting Message', @.V_Handle);

RECEIVE TOP(1) @.V_Message = message_body,

@.V_Handle = conversation_handle

FROM ArchivingMessageQueue

INSERT INTO TestServiceBroker VALUES(@.V_Message, @.V_Handle)

END CONVERSATION @.V_Handle

WITH cleanup

END

CREATE QUEUE ReceiverQueue

WITH ACTIVATION(

PROCEDURE_NAME = pArchiveMessageHandler,

MAX_QUEUE_READERS = 5,

EXECUTE AS 'dbo'

);

CREATE CONTRACT RecieverContract

(

ArchivingMessage SENT BY INITIATOR

);

CREATE SERVICE ReceiverService ON QUEUE ReceiverQueue

( RecieverContract )

/********************** Sample script ***********************/

GO

DECLARE @.V_Handle UNIQUEIDENTIFIER

BEGIN DIALOG CONVERSATION @.V_Handle

FROM SERVICE SenderService

TO SERVICE 'ReceiverService'

ON CONTRACT SenderContract;

SEND ON CONVERSATION @.V_Handle

MESSAGE TYPE ArchivingMessage('<XmlType/>');

select * from TestServiceBroker(nolock)

Hi:

Why do you need to create two services in the same database...in the first place. I know it works between two different databases but have not tired with same database.

Pramod

|||

Although it is possible to associate two services with the same queue, this is a very atypical usage. Messages sent to the target service as well as messages received from the target service will be delivered to the same queue.

In your script above, you are not doing this, so I'm not sure if you meant to say "same queue" or "same database".

Having both the initiator service and target service is in the same database is certainly a valid and useful configuration. You would use this typically for doing asynchronous database work.

In your script, the stored proc is RECEIVing messages from ArchivingMessageQueue (which doesn't exist) instead of ReceiverQueue. Also why are you ending the conversation with cleanup. Cleanup should not be used during normal working of an app. It is used as an admin command when things go wrong.

|||

You can have as up to ~65000 services in a database. Communication between services in the same database is identical with communication between services in different databases or different instances.

Can you specify what you mean by 'but i couldnt see them working properly' ?

A small correction to the code posted by you:

CREATE QUEUE ReceiverQueue

WITH ACTIVATION(

STATUS = ON,

PROCEDURE_NAME = pArchiveMessageHandler,

MAX_QUEUE_READERS = 5,

EXECUTE AS 'dbo'

);

|||

I modified the activation stored proc as well as the receiver queue based on your feedback. But still i could see the service running. When i say the services are not running means.. my query "select * from TestServiceBroker(nolock)" is not returning any rows.

I Would like to tell you people about what exactly is my requirement. We have a master table X and around 20 transaction tables say A, B, C, D, E,..etc. The transaction tables uses data available in the master table. When ever a row in the master tables is disabled(we have a flag column which holds state) we would like to disable all the trasaction tables(A, B, C, D....) data which is referring to the master X row. The process of disableing the transaction table rows can happen in an asynchronous way. To achieve this we planned to implement Fire and Forget style of service brokering. When ever a master table row is disabled we need to queue a message(using a trigger on the master table) for disabling the transaction table rows. An activation procedure needs to do the job of reading the queued request and disableing transcation table rows.

Also, can you please give me links of e-books and white papers on Service Brokers?

Regards,

Gopi

|||

Have you looked over my troubleshooting mini-guide at http://blogs.msdn.com/remusrusanu/archive/2005/12/20/506221.aspx ? Please follow this guide to figure out where do your messages 'disappear'. If I'd have to guess in your case I'd say that the database is lacking the master key required for secure dialogs.

One thing to note is that you should not use the WITH CLEANUP clause in the END DIALOG statement. The CLEANUP clause removes the conversation endpoint (target) without sending any notification to the other conversation endpoint (initiator). See also this post here http://blogs.msdn.com/remusrusanu/archive/2006/01/27/518455.aspx

The design you're trying to achieve shouldn't be any problem if the asynchronous processing is required or desired. One thing you'll have to consider is the order of execution of these enable/disable operations. Service Broker guarantees the order of delivery only within a conversation.

HTH,
~ Remus

|||

Thanks Remus.

I'll debug the problem with your suggestions.

I took the liberty of rewriting your sample script. I changed several things and also added numerous explanatory comments. You can compare your original to this to see what was wrong. Just copy/paste this into mgmt. studio and run the whole thing at once.

Hi Gerald,

Thank you very much for you help. It's working.

Can we create shared report parametres?

Hi, all experts here,

Is it possible to create shared report parametres passing among different reports on SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services? If it is possible, and how?

Thanks a lot in advance for your advices. And I am looking forward to hearing from you.

With best regards,

Yours sincerely,

No, it's not possible to create a shared parameter, though you can pass the parameter values from one report to another either on user action or to subreports.

Can we create distinct values for document map on a particular level?

Hi, all experts here,

Thank you very much for your kind attention.

I am having a question about document map on SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services. I found one problem with the values retrived for the document level. That is, the values are not distinct, they are duplicate for the document level. Is it possible for us to get the distinct values for a particular document level? Hope my question is clear for your help.

Thank you very much in advance for your help and advices. I am looking forward to hearing from you.

With best regards,

Yours sincerely,

Group your data in either the table or list (whatever you are using) and use document map for the group.

Shyam

|||

Hi, Shyam,

Thanks a lot for your kind advices.

Yes, jsut found out that cause I got more than one groups in my reports. And the document map level is not the first group there, so once I run the report, the document map on that level got duplicate values. Now it is clear.

Thank you very much.

With best regards,

Yours sincerely,

Can we call a RS report from within another VB or VBA application?

Will I be able to launch a reporting services report from within a VB/VBA
application? How would I do this?
Thanks
Ranjit CharlesThree options:
1. URL integration. Embed a IE control into any app and set the url
appropriately. Works with VB6, VB.Net, etc.
2. Web services integration. Works with VB.Net, VB6 with soap toolkit (but
can be problematic and I suggest staying away from it).
3. VB.Net 2005 use the new report control that ships with VS 2005.

Can we automate and schedule Analysis Services Databases Back up and Restore Actions?

Hi, all here,

Would please anyone here give me any advice about wether or not we can automate and schedule the Analysis Services databases backup and restore actions?

Thanks a lot in advance for any guidance and help for that.

With best regards,

You just have to create a XMLA backup command, somethink like this:

<Backup xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2003/engine">
<Object>
<DatabaseID>MyDBId</DatabaseID>
</Object>
<File>c:\MyDB.abf</File>
<AllowOverwrite>true</AllowOverwrite>
</Backup>

Then create a new SQL Server Agent job of type "SQL Server Analysis Services Command" and schedule it as needed.

See:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms186658.aspx

and

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/bkupssas.mspx

Hope this helps,

Santi

|||

Hi, Santiago, thank you very much. Got it done.

|||Hi, this is great. But I want to schedule a SQL Agent job that loops through the list of all Analysis services databases and automatically applies the xmla to the current database.

e.g. to do this with normal dbs in TSQL you could loop through all the databases from master.dbo.sysdatabases and store the current db as a parameter.

How can pass parameters to XMLA? and if parameters aren't possible, how can you backup multiple dbs from a single script? e.g. the following doesnt work if you execute both at the same time.

<Backup xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2003/engine">
<Object>
<DatabaseID>MyDB1</DatabaseID>
</Object>
<File>c:\MyDB1.abf</File>
<AllowOverwrite>true</AllowOverwrite>
</Backup><Backup xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2003/engine">
<Object>
<DatabaseID>MyDB2</DatabaseID>
</Object>
<File>c:\MyDB2.abf</File>
<AllowOverwrite>true</AllowOverwrite>
</Backup>|||anyone?|||

You can wrap multiple commands inside a Batch. But remember that XMLA is a general purpose scripting language like TSQL. It does not have control flow, branching, etc.

<Batch xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2003/engine">
<Backup xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2003/engine">
<Object>
<DatabaseID>MyDB1</DatabaseID>

<Object>
<DatabaseID>MyDB2</DatabaseID>
</Object>
<File>c:\MyDB2.abf</File>
<AllowOverwrite>true</AllowOverwrite>
</Backup>
</Batch>

|||Thanks T.K Anand for your reply. The syntax is definitely correct, but when I try running the above batch statement I get the error:

Executed as user: Domain\username. <return xmlns="urnTongue Tiedchemas-microsoft-com:xml-analysis"><results xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2003/xmla-multipleresults"><root xmlns="urnTongue Tiedchemas-microsoft-com:xml-analysis:empty"><Exception xmlns="urnTongue Tiedchemas-microsoft-com:xml-analysis:exception" /><Messages xmlns="urnTongue Tiedchemas-microsoft-com:xml-analysis:exception"><Error ErrorCode="3239968805" Description="Backup and restore errors: Neither Backup/Restore nor Synchronize command can be invoked in a user initiated transaction." I tried scheduling this as a SQL Server Agent job, but the same error occurs and there is no backup file in the location that I specified?

can use microsoft .net 2002

Hi everybody,
I want to know if I can install reporting services using microsoft .Net
version 2002...because I read the requirements and it said microsoft .net
2003...but I have .net version 2002...Do you think that I can use version 200?
cheers,No, you cannot. You need any version of VS 2003 (VB.Net is the cheapest at
about $100).

Can this be done in the reporting services (SQL 2005)

Based on the data in the SQL server table (Customers address table) I
want to print letters (with individual customers address) as a pdf
file?
This is similar to Form Letters in Word document and use mail merge but
my requirements is letters needed as a pdf file and the whole process
should be an automated scheduled task?I thing that you would be better served looking at using Word, form letters,
and getting a PDF print driver. And of course, you can automate Word on a
scheduled basis using either VBA or VB/C# .NET code.

Can there be read only fields in a reporting services report?

Hey guys, I have a really dumb question. In the header of my report I am trying to put in a text box. This text box should look like this.

Legend Value 1

Value 2

Value 3

Here is my problem. Everytime I put in a carrige return it clears everything that I have in the box. What is going on? I then thought I should put in a table which would make my life easier but it does not allow me to put in a table in the header.. HELP

Open the expresion builder and simply enter the text as you want it to appear (without an equal sign) but with your returns. Even though it will look as if there is only one line, all three will be there when the report is renderred.

PS... only dumb question is the one you do not ask .

Lonnie,

That was easy, thank you very much.. Trust me, I really didn't want to ask this question but nothing seemed like an obvious solution

|||you can also try this way. After you type the first line in the text box, press Shift + Enter. This should take you to the next line.|||

Hi,

I am trying to create a report using reporting services. This report will be displayed to the user in Excel. All this works fine.

Now the report generated in excel needs to have some fields locked down while others will remain edittable. Is this possible?

Please let me know asap...

Thanks in advance.

Can SSIS work in a Cluster

We have just installed a new SQL 2005 Clustered server and loaded integration services. However it appears that integrations services may not work properly in a clustered environment.

So can integration services be setup on a clustered SQL 2005 server?

Funny, someone asked the same question earlier today. Is it clustering day? :)

Go here anyway: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=366352&SiteID=1

How about if this is a multi instance cluster? In the config fil there is only room for 1 server/instance of SQL. <ServerName>K-CLUSTER2-SQL1</ServerName>. Can other instances use this SSIS service? Or is there additional configuration?

Thx

Can SQL Server DTS Package be access thru Delphi?

I have defined a Data Transformation Services (DTS) package in MS SQL Server. In VB I know that the DTS execution can be done thru VB codings. But what about Delphi?
Can anybody suggest any Delphi components or codings for this purpose.
Thannks in advance.Don't know about Delphi, but if you know how to call SQL objects then follow the same method to call DTS packages also.

See whether http://www.sqldts.com is any help to you for information in this regard.|||i don't know Delphi
but if Delphi supports COM there is no problem...|||Using COM you can call DTS package or use activex to call it.

Can SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services run against/on a SQL Server 2000 instance?

I was wondering SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services can run against/on a SQL Server 2000 database/instance?

Thanks,

Michael

Yes, for both metadata (the Report Server database) as well as report data.|||

Is there anything that I should know about when installing the SQL Server 2005 Reporting services? Is there any special requirements? Are there any special requirements when upgrading from SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services to SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services?

I do appreciate the help and advice. Google unfortunately has not turned up any answers for me.

Thanks,

Michael

Thank you so much. I appreciate the help. This solves my problem.

Can SQL Server 2000 & 2005 Reporting Services live together?

Can SQL Server 2000 Reporting Services live on the same server with SQL
Server 2005 Reporting Servives?yes
with a named instance, both works fine on 1 of my server.
but RS2005 support RS2000 reports, so there is no real needs to keep the 2
versions.
An RS2000 developper can deploy reports to an RS2005 server without problem
or the developper can upgrade the RS2000 reports to the 2005 format easily.

concern as the OP expressed comes when you have to developed/support both
with your developing computer: due to various reasons, you may not have that
many test server available to install them seperately.
So, when you install the SQL Server2000 and 2005 as different named
instance, how the RS' virtue direcctories are organised? Hwen there is only
one of them, there would be http://serverName/Reports and
http://servername/reportServer. What happens if you install both? Does the
installation process prompt you to specify a desired virtue path, or does it
automatically create a different path, as you install different .NET
version? I really do not want to take any risk to mess up my two alreay
messy development boxes.

is:
http://server/reportserver$instancename
but using the RS configuration tool, you can create the reportserver virtual
directory you want.
You can quickly and easily manage this, not like in RS2000 where there is
no tool to do this job.
