Can we find the list of filenames associated with a DB using VDI ?

Hi all,
I want to find the list of filenames associated with the SQL server instance programmatically. As VDI is concerned with taking backup of SQL server. Can we find the list of filenames associated with a DB using VDI ? or Is there any other way to know filenames?

Thanks in Advance,
Ram

You can always execute sp_helpfile in a database to find the files for that database.

Or select * from sys.database_files

Can we do Transaction log backup and log shipping on same server.

Hi,
I know that Log Shipping and Transaction log backup cannot be
done on same primary server side by side because i tried it, but i want
possible reason for that.
Next i want to know is that can we Detach and re Atach Log
Shipping Database on secondary server in a Standby mode (as you know
this database is itself in standby mode before detaching).
thanks and regards,
Sajid.What's version are you using?

You can do it, but you don't want to. Log shipping is based on transaction l
og backups. And as you
know, log backups has to be performed in sequence. So if the first log backu
p is shipped to the
other server, and the second is done by you and not shipped to the server, t
hen the third log backup
done my log shipping won't restore as the second haven't been restored. It i
s possible that the
built-in log shipping tries somehow to restrict you from such a scenario, wh
ich would be a smart
thing to do.

I want to schedule a job in ms sql server 2000 which will
copy the backup file from one server whose drive is mapped to
destination server where the backup file should get copied.
After copying the file i want to restore it on a same
destination server.
I can restore it with the help of Restore Database with move
option command, but the problem is the backup file is in format like
'sample_db_200605122100.bak' where sample is database name and numbers
indicate the date and time when backup was taken.
Now, i want to make a batch file which will delete the
previous same backup file, copy the backup file and rename it to
standard filename say 'sample_db_backup.bak'.
This batch file i can shedule to run through ms sql server
jobs by using 'xp_cmdshell'.
Please revert me on this ASAP.
Thanks and Regards,
Sajid.

Can we backup to a remote drive?

Please let me know. Can we backup SQL Server database to a network drive?Yes.
From the backup command you'll want to use a UNC drive reference such as

Can we automate and schedule Analysis Services Databases Back up and Restore Actions?

Hi, all here,

Would please anyone here give me any advice about wether or not we can automate and schedule the Analysis Services databases backup and restore actions?

Thanks a lot in advance for any guidance and help for that.

With best regards,

You just have to create a XMLA backup command, somethink like this:

<Backup xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2003/engine">
<Object>
<DatabaseID>MyDBId</DatabaseID>
</Object>
<File>c:\MyDB.abf</File>
<AllowOverwrite>true</AllowOverwrite>
</Backup>

Then create a new SQL Server Agent job of type "SQL Server Analysis Services Command" and schedule it as needed.

See:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms186658.aspx

and

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/bkupssas.mspx

Hope this helps,

Santi

Hi, Santiago, thank you very much. Got it done.

|||Hi, this is great. But I want to schedule a SQL Agent job that loops through the list of all Analysis services databases and automatically applies the xmla to the current database.

e.g. to do this with normal dbs in TSQL you could loop through all the databases from master.dbo.sysdatabases and store the current db as a parameter.

How can pass parameters to XMLA? and if parameters aren't possible, how can you backup multiple dbs from a single script? e.g. the following doesnt work if you execute both at the same time.

<Backup xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2003/engine">
<Object>
<DatabaseID>MyDB1</DatabaseID>
</Object>
<File>c:\MyDB1.abf</File>
<AllowOverwrite>true</AllowOverwrite>
</Backup><Backup xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2003/engine">
<Object>
<DatabaseID>MyDB2</DatabaseID>
</Object>
<File>c:\MyDB2.abf</File>
<AllowOverwrite>true</AllowOverwrite>
</Backup>|||anyone?|||

You can wrap multiple commands inside a Batch. But remember that XMLA is a general purpose scripting language like TSQL. It does not have control flow, branching, etc.

<Batch xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2003/engine">
<Backup xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2003/engine">
<Object>
<DatabaseID>MyDB1</DatabaseID>
</Object>
<File>c:\MyDB1.abf</File>
<AllowOverwrite>true</AllowOverwrite>
</Backup><Backup xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2003/engine">
<Object>
<DatabaseID>MyDB2</DatabaseID>
</Object>
<File>c:\MyDB2.abf</File>
<AllowOverwrite>true</AllowOverwrite>
</Backup>
</Batch>

|||Thanks T.K Anand for your reply. The syntax is definitely correct, but when I try running the above batch statement I get the error:

Executed as user: Domain\username. <return xmlns="urnTongue Tiedchemas-microsoft-com:xml-analysis"><results xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/analysisservices/2003/xmla-multipleresults"><root xmlns="urnTongue Tiedchemas-microsoft-com:xml-analysis:empty"><Exception xmlns="urnTongue Tiedchemas-microsoft-com:xml-analysis:exception" /><Messages xmlns="urnTongue Tiedchemas-microsoft-com:xml-analysis:exception"><Error ErrorCode="3239968805" Description="Backup and restore errors: Neither Backup/Restore nor Synchronize command can be invoked in a user initiated transaction." Source="Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services" HelpFile="" /></Messages></root></results></return>. The step succeeded.

I tried scheduling this as a SQL Server Agent job, but the same error occurs and there is no backup file in the location that I specified?

You can wrap multiple commands inside a Batch. But remember that XMLA is a general purpose scripting language like TSQL. It does not have control flow, branching, etc.

I tried scheduling this as a SQL Server Agent job, but the same error occurs and there is no backup file in the location that I specified?

Can the TEMPDB be backed up?

You need to run a "Full Backup" on all of your other
Databases.
It may also be a good idea to look at scheduling "Full
Backups" on a more frequent basis. Whenever "Full
Backups" are done, the TempDB is automatically re-sized to
remove all of the temporary data. As TempDB is a system
database, it cannot be manipulated or controlled by any
user.

I don't think that's true. The only "automatic" resizing of tempdb occurs
when SQL Server restarts, where it reverts to its original size.

Also not true. See http://support.microsoft.com/?id=307487 for manual

Can SQL Unzip after backup is complete

After our Daily backups are complete, I would like Sql to Open a Zip File.
Is their a command to do this within SQL?
EddieThere's no direct SQL command to open a zip file. What do you want SQL Serve
r to do with the zip
file? What does the zip file contain? Do you want to unzip the zip file and
extract the files in it?
In any event, you can use the command-line version of winzip, called wzzip,
from xp_cmdshell. If you
want to compress your backups, there are some 3:rd party apps that does this

All backups in MSSQL are 'hot' in the sense that you do not have to stop the
MSSQL service, and you do not have to disconnect users from the database.
This is true in all versions of MSSQL, and all backup types (full, log,
filegroup, differential) are also available in all versions. Other high
availability options (replication, clustering, log shipping) do depend on
the version in terms of what functionality is available.

Yes. As long as the GAM is OK, the DB should back up. Backup is there to
backup, not verify the consistency of a DB. Use DBCC on a regular basis to
ensure your DB is not corrupt.
If this occurs often, check your hardware. SQL 2000 corruption is mostly
caused by hardware problems.

Can't remember what GAM is, but in our case, we could not backup our
database. We had a low-level disk corruption issue (invalid checksum) that
we were never able to solve. MS unfortunately was not able to provide any
work around. (I was hoping for some sort of undocumented flag that would
basically say, "ignore the problem" but apparently it does not exist.
So, I think the answer is, "it can vary".

Can SQL 2005 Backup to a different file name each night?

In SQL 2000, I could use the DB Maint Wizard to create a backup that created
a new backup file each night. This basic feature does not appear to be an
option in SQL 2005. Is there some workaround? Anyone know if this will be
part of SP01?
I have hundreds of systems that have 4 5GB databases where we do full
backups every night. I do NOT want to append the previous nights backup to
the existing file, and I do NOT want to overwrite last nights backup because
I don't want to be without a backup if tonight's backup fails.
All suggestions are welcome, but I need a very simple way to set this up on
hundreds of systems by non-computer literate people.
Rob Kraft
Never mind group. I cannot recreate the problem I had. Originally in
testing, all of the backups were appending to the same date/time stamped
filename. I set up a new plan and it seems to work as desired - creating a
new file each time the backup runs. I have to manually add a cleanup task
to the DB Maint Plan created by the wizard to delete old DB files, but I've
got that figured out too.

|||Chris, I could not do this using the Maintenance Plan Wizard. Instead, after
creating the plan, right-click on the plan and select Modify. Then, on the
left hand side (probably) -drag a "Maintenance Cleanup Task" from the
Toolbox window into your plan (make sure you do NOT grab the "History
Cleanup Task"). Right-click on the "Maintenance Cleanup Task" and select
Edit. They you can specify to delete files in a specific folder that are
older than a n Weeks (or n Days). (and you can specify to delete files with
just a specific extension such as bak). Close that window then click on the
"Maintenance Cleanup Task" in the maintence plan and click and drag the
green arrow that appears down to the "Back Up Database Task" you just
created to cause the "Back Up Database Task" to execute after the file
delete.
Technically, I don't see a way using these tools to delete "the oldest
file"; but you can delete "all files over n days old".
