Can two separate SQL Server instances on a clustered box share the same resource name such as SQ

I am setting up a two active instances of MS SQL Server on a clustered box. In the past I have set up using the nomenclature SQLCLUSTERNAME\INSTANCE-NAME such as SQLCLUS1\INST1 and SQLCLUS2\INST2.

But, this time the client will like it installed such as SQLCLUS1\INST1 and SQLCLUS1\INST2. I did not think this is possible That is I assumed that cluster resource names have to be unique. But, nevertheless I have tried to do so for the last few days, but no luck.

Can someone please let me know if it is indeed possible to have two separate instances in a single cluster.

BTW, I know this is quite possible with non-clustered instances where the SQLSERV1\INST1 refers to an actual server name, and not a resource name.

You are partially correct.

You CAN have two separate instances in a cluster -but in order for the cluster resource names on both instances to be the same, both instances will have to be installed on the same node. You could do that, making it an Active-Passive cluster -but I don't think that is what you desire. So if you wish both nodes to be Active, then you will have to continue using distinctive resource names (as in your first surmise.)

|||BTW, how would you set up. One Active, and one passive with different instance names.|||The same way that you set up an Active-Active cluster, except you put both instances on the same node.|||I am still a little unsure. Will the instances have names such as SQLCLUS1\INST1 and SQLCLUS1\INST2 or SQLCLUS1\INST1 and SQLCLUS2\INST2.

If you are asking about two instances on the same host, then SQLCLUS1\INST1 and SQLCLUS1\INST2 would work.

Instance names can be whatever you desire. The virtual server name will be the same in both cases.

Can this be done?

Hello,

I have been trying to figure out what seems to be a simple task:

I have a dataset (of 10 rows) and a text box. You are to display the value found in the 3rd row, first column of my dataset into that textbox. You may not alter the dataset.

I want to know how this can be done. Is there a way to loop through the dataset programmatically in a function?

I also tried this: The below code sets the value for MYTEXTBOX. If the value in “MyField” of my dataset = “0.0”, I want MYTEXTBOX to hold the value of “MyRelatedField” (so another field within the same row of my dataset). Otherwise, DO NOTHING!!!!!, but because all functions MUST return a value, I attempted to return the value of MYTEXTBOX—hence setting it equal to what it already is, but this give me #ERROR!

=iif(Fields!MyField.Value = "0.0",Fields!MyRelatedField.Value, ReportItems!MYTEXTBOX.Value)

I have read the wrox reporting service book from front to back, and what seems like pie is giving me a grief—any help, link or advice would be so much appreciated!...much thanks, John

It could be done through some custom code. Store the data set element access code in a little class and refer it from the report

What about saving the first dataset into a multivalue report parameter (make it internal or hidden if you do not want users to see it)
Make a 2nd dataset that selects top 3 from the multivalue parameter.

The textfield value should then be something like =Last(Fields!<nameOfField>.Value, "<name of 1st dataset>")

That way you have not changed the first dataset and you get the correct value in your text box

I cannot test it at the moment so it might not work (I'm in the middle of installing the SP2 CTP and have a little time for surfing while it's doing its thing) :-)

Can This Be Done - Display Yes/No parameters using a check box

I have a parameters that is either yes or no, I want to be able to show this
parameter in a checkbox - for the parameter of Yes, the check box needs to
show all the Yes answers, if they want the No answers that want to uncheck
the box.
Can this be done? Any information on how?
thanks
noraWithout custom programming, the only way to get check boxes in the parameter
area of SSRS is
1. to allow Nulls ( you get a check box to say the value is null)
2. Have a multi-select list box, populated with Yes, No... You could select
both however..
Otherwise you are stuck with Radio buttons or regular lists... ( or put an
html page in front of the report, with your check boxes, and let the html
page call the Report URL)

Can there be read only fields in a reporting services report?

Hey guys, I have a really dumb question. In the header of my report I am trying to put in a text box. This text box should look like this.

Legend Value 1

Value 2

Value 3

Here is my problem. Everytime I put in a carrige return it clears everything that I have in the box. What is going on? I then thought I should put in a table which would make my life easier but it does not allow me to put in a table in the header.. HELP

Open the expresion builder and simply enter the text as you want it to appear (without an equal sign) but with your returns. Even though it will look as if there is only one line, all three will be there when the report is renderred.

PS... only dumb question is the one you do not ask .

Lonnie,

That was easy, thank you very much.. Trust me, I really didn't want to ask this question but nothing seemed like an obvious solution

|||you can also try this way. After you type the first line in the text box, press Shift + Enter. This should take you to the next line.|||

Hi,

I am trying to create a report using reporting services. This report will be displayed to the user in Excel. All this works fine.

Now the report generated in excel needs to have some fields locked down while others will remain edittable. Is this possible?

Please let me know asap...

Thanks in advance.

Can SQL Express 2005 & MSDE reside on the same box?

Is the installation of MSDE and SQL Express 2005 on the same computer a supported configuration?

Many thanks

Yes, you can run Express and MSDE/WMSDE in the same machine using different instance names.

Can RS 2005 point to SQL 2000 DB?

I would like to install Reporting Services 2005 on one IIS box and point to a
separate SQL Server 2000 box which would be used to host its two databases
(ReportingServer and ReportingServerTempDB).
Will this work?
--
LulkYes. You need a 2005 license on the IIS box but the databases can be on 2000
(I am running in this configuration).

can be hosted on SQL Server 2000. You can use the Reporting Services
Configuration Tool to accomplish this easily enough.

separate ISS server and point to a separate 2000 SQL Server? What if I point
to a separate SQL 2005 Server, would that configuration still require two SQL
Server licenses?
