can we connect?

can we connect named instance through IP like in the network utility I just
defined the IP of the server where the named instance installed and define
the port...
Client Netowork Utility > Alias >
Alias: MyServer
Server: 209.45.23.55
Port : 1434
Protocol: TCP/IP
any thing else I need to do for connecting this... I did the above stuff but
I had failed to connect but why I can connect the default instance... please
guide me..
Thanks and I would highly appreciate if your prompt reply
thanks and have a great day
Hi,
Open the SQL Server error log under the folder
SQL_Server_installation_path>X\MSSQL$instance_name \LOG folder to make sure
that the SQL Server named instance runs well and to find the TCP port which
this named instance is listening.
As well as using Server network utility verify TCP/IP protocol is enabled.
Get the SQL Server name from Error log and use that name to connect from
query analyzer
Thanks

Can the SQL Server 2005 be installed on Windows 2003 SP1?

I recently attempted to install Windows 2003 SP1 on a machine on which someone had previously installed SQL Server 2005. The build number for the SQL Server 2005 installation is 9.0.1116. (BTW, which CTP is this build number?)

The installation of the service pack seemed to go okay, but I soon got calls from users reporting that they could not log in to the instance. I investigated, and discovered that the SQL Server service had not started. We were unable to start the service, and had to remove SP1.

This was the message I found in Event Viewer:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: SQLDUMPER
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5000
Date: 8/15/2005
Time: 10:30:30
User: N/A

My questions are:
1) What happened?
2) Can I install the current CTP on Windows 2003 SP1?

Hi,

That version corresponds to the April CTP of SQL Server.

You could log that as a bug in Product Feedback:

Thanks for the reply,
Ken|||The Build number for June CTP needs is 9.0.1187. I have it running successfully on machine with Win2003 server with SP1. I installed SQL Server 2005 after installing SP1.

I installed the June CTP on Windows 2003 SP1 and I am up and running. Thanks.

Can start new database from Web Matrix

I am running Web Matrix version 0.5, .Net version 1.1 on a computer with XP Pro.

Web Matrix works fine and returns forms properly.

I installed MSDE from the website (SQL2KDeskSP3a.exe) Ibelieve that SQL Server IS running, because I see the tower icon with agreen arrow; when I double-click that I get a message that it isrunning SQL Server.

When I click the "data" tab in Web Matrix I get the blankworkspace. Then I click the New Connection icon at the top left, which opens up a dialog box. I change "Windows Authentication" to"SQL Authentication." That opens up the Username/Passwordprompt. I am entering "sa" for the username (I AM NOT SURE IFTHAT IS CORRECT) and "**secret**" for the password (that's what Ientered in the command prompt when I setup the MSDE). Then Iclick "Create a New Database." I am asked to enter a name.

After a pause, I get an error message: "Unable to connect tothe database server. SQL Server does not exist or access denied.Connection Open (Connect ( )). OK

Do you have any ideas?

I installed the newer (version 0.6) Matrix and now I can find the database.

Can SSRS 2005 be installed on Windows XP SP2?

I installed SQL Server 2005 Developer edition on a Windows XP SP2 to run side by side with SQL Server 2000 dev edition and SSRS 2000.

Can SSRS 2005 be installed to run on Windows XP SP2?

Thanks

Yes you can.

I have RS2005 installed on my portable computer (with Windows XP SP 2) and it's work fine - even the development tool (VS2005). Of course you need to have IIS installed on your computer.

Good luck.

Can SSIS work in a Cluster

We have just installed a new SQL 2005 Clustered server and loaded integration services. However it appears that integrations services may not work properly in a clustered environment.

So can integration services be setup on a clustered SQL 2005 server?

Funny, someone asked the same question earlier today. Is it clustering day? :)

How about if this is a multi instance cluster? In the config fil there is only room for 1 server/instance of SQL. <ServerName>K-CLUSTER2-SQL1</ServerName>. Can other instances use this SSIS service? Or is there additional configuration?

Thx

Can SQL tools be installed from server install?

Good day,

Can SQL Server tools (QA, EM) can be installed on a client machine from
a full SQL Server installation on a server? I can't find the CD.

Thanks for your time.

Probably, but you would have to spend some time registering DLLs etc,
and it would be quite messy.

So finding the CD is a good idea.

If you are an MSDN Universal Subscribler, you can get it from MSDN
Downloads.

And if you don't have it, you can download it from www.microsoft.com.

There might be two issues:
1) License may not permit connecting to production environments.
2) It used to be that service packs can be applied to EvalEdition. I
don't know if this still is the case.

Can SQL Server7.0 be installed in XP Professional O/S

I would appreciate to know, Is it possibale to install
SQL Server7.0 or 2000 Server Components in XP Professioal

I want both the Server and Client components to be
installed on the same machine running XP Professional. Is
there any way...please let me know.
Thanks,
Sivatechnically, yes. it is however crippled. I had installed it (SQL2000) on my
laptop to test at home but it is missing some managment utils and you will
be limited to 10 connections inbound. it's not useful though and really just
drags you system down. (not worth the license).

Yes - they can, as long as you're installing the correct EDITION of SQL
Server for XP.
There's a list of which editions can be installed on which O/Ss here:
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/evaluation/sysreqs/2000/default.asp
Short answer though is that you probably want Developer Edition if you're
developing databases, stored procs etc. It is cheap too - approx $50 I
believe..

Can SQL Server Express coexist with SQL 7/2000?

Can SQL Server Express coexist with SQL 7/2000?

What is the order in which they are to be installed/uninstalled?

Yes you can but you will need the SQL Server 2005 developer edition which comes with management studio and cost less than $40 to manage all. If you really don't want to spend the money then you may need to upgrade the SQL Server 7.0 to 2000 so you will only access the SQL Server Express through command line. I am assuming you know there is no DRI (declarative referential integrity) in SQL Server 7.0 and SQL Server 7.0 uses TDS(tabular data stream) 70, while SQL Server 2000 uses TDS 80 and SQL Server 2005 Express uses TDS 90. If you are interested check out Provantage for the developer edition. Hope this helps.

http://www.provantage.com/microsoft-e32-00575~7MCSB0EX.htm

|||

So I assume that what you meant to say was that sans the graphical management tool (management studio), SQL Server 7.0, 2000 and 2005 Express can all coexist? Correct me if I understood wrong.

Regarding Management Studio for graphical management of SQL 2005 Express, yes I have downloaded and installed that for free.

What about the 2nd part of my original question - say I already have SQL Server 7.0 or 2000 in my machine. Will installing SQL Server 2005 Express have any repercussions? What about the other way round- SQL 2005 Express first, then SQL Server 2000?

|||

You said you have installed SQL Server 2005 Express management tool, I am not sure you can use it to manage SQL Server 7/2000, if you can then you are good to go.

I must tell you I am not comfortable advising you to run SQL Server 7.0 without full management tool. If you are interested you can install SQL Server 7.0, 2000 and then the Express but also install the eval yes you can install all because I think the limit is seven in one box. The reason is I think it is ok to use express to deploy intranet application but I don't see it as a development tool. Hope this helps.

Can SQL Server 7.0 handle a SQL Server 2000 mdf?

I've got MSDE, SQL Server 7.0, installed. I want to handle an .mdf
developed by someone else so I loaded the .mdf into my /DATA folder.
But, MSDE/ODBC can't see the database. I subsequently discovered that
it was created using SQL Server 2000. Is this the reason that my MSDE
7.0 doesn't see the .mdf? If so, how can I use this database with my
7.0? Backup from 2000, restore to 7.0?

Well, there's actually two problems here.

The fact that MSDE/ODBC can't see the database has nothing to do with
the versions of SQL Server. Putting a file into your data directory has
no effect. You would have to do sp_attach_db to make the database available.
And for sp_attach_db the .mdf is not sufficient; you would need the log
file too. There is sp_attach_single_file_db for this situation, but the
database must have been shut down cleanly for this. (Well, this applies
to sp_attach_db as well as I recall.)

But for all this to work, the target server must be the same version or
later than the source server, so you can never do anything with that file
without access to SQL 2000. To restore that database on SQL 7, you would
have to script it and bulk out all data. And if the database makes use
of features not in SQL 7, not even this method would work.

Since MSDE for SQL 2000 is freely available, it appears to be a good idea
to download and install it.

Thank you Erland, for your answer. We've got the log file. So,
following your advice I will look for and install MSDE 2000. After
that I presume I have to run the 'sp_attach_db' procedure to make the
db available to MSDE 2000 so that I can create an ODBC to see it from
Access 2000. Could you please confirm if that is correct?

That should work just fine.

Once you have MSDE 2000 up, do a SELECT @.@.version, and make sure that
you have at least 8.00.760, so you have SP3 and the fix for the Slammer

Erland,

I've downloaded MSDE 2000 (Italian version), expanded the zip, read
the readme.txt, checked the things they tell me to check. I started
the setup with:

setup SAPWD="password" SECURITYMODE=SQL

The install fails with roughly 3 - 5 seconds remaining with following
message:

"Impossible to configure the Server. For further information examine
the error logs..."

The last 2 messages in the log are:

Warning: override, autoexec procedures skipped.

and

Closing down SQL Server because of a interruption request from the
Service control handler (my translation)

I can't see what's going wrong. Can you help me?

Unfortunately, I have no experience of running the MSDE setup, so
there is not much I can assist with.

Do you run the setup on the machine where you already have MSDE 7, or
do you run it on some other machine?

Erland,

I'm doing the install on another machine where there is no previous

I am running SQL Server 2000 on a WinXP Pro machine. So i would assume SQL 7 should go together with XP Pro.

Greetings,
Carsten|||You need the developer edition to install SQL 2000 on Windows XP.

Standard Edition does not install.

Probably the same as with SQL Server 7.

Can SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Ed be installed on a server with 4G

SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Ed is limited to 3GB RAM. Does that mean it cannot
use more than 3GB RAM under any circumstances, but it can be installed on a
server having more than 3GB total RAM; or, does that mean that it cannot be
installed or used on a server having more than 3GB RAM?
Hello,
You can install SQL Server workgroup edition ina machine with more than 3 GB
RAM and more than 2 CPU. But the limitation is SQL Server workgroup
edition can maximum use only 3 GB of RAM and 2 CPU.

|||The statement means that Workgroup Edition will only use up to 3GB memory,
even if the server has more available. It will run on a server with 4GB.
Hope this helps.

Can SQL Server 2005 Express and SQL Server 2005 be installed on same machine?

I am interested in installing both SQL Server 2005 Express and SQL Server
2005 b2 on the same machine. Can they both be installed on the same machine
without conflicts? As in two different instances?

From what I understand of the installation process, and the fact that
Express *wants* to be in a seperate named instance, I'd guess it'd be
fine. But at the end of the day, the fastest way to find out is to
suck it and see...
