Can start new database from Web Matrix

I am running Web Matrix version 0.5, .Net version 1.1 on a computer with XP Pro.

Web Matrix works fine and returns forms properly.

I installed MSDE from the website (SQL2KDeskSP3a.exe) Ibelieve that SQL Server IS running, because I see the tower icon with agreen arrow; when I double-click that I get a message that it isrunning SQL Server.

When I click the "data" tab in Web Matrix I get the blankworkspace. Then I click the New Connection icon at the top left, which opens up a dialog box. I change "Windows Authentication" to"SQL Authentication." That opens up the Username/Passwordprompt. I am entering "sa" for the username (I AM NOT SURE IFTHAT IS CORRECT) and "**secret**" for the password (that's what Ientered in the command prompt when I setup the MSDE). Then Iclick "Create a New Database." I am asked to enter a name.

After a pause, I get an error message: "Unable to connect tothe database server. SQL Server does not exist or access denied.Connection Open (Connect ( )). OK

Do you have any ideas?

I installed the newer (version 0.6) Matrix and now I can find the database.

Can SSIS work with an XML web service? (Verisign Payflow Pro)

I'm trying to figure out a solution for posting financial transactions against our Payflow Pro (Verisign) payment gateway (web service) using SSIS. The process I have in my mind goes like this...

1.) Select the appropriate records from our financial system DB.

2.) Iterate through each record and post the pertinent values against the payment gateway web service.

3.) Create log files for successful and failed transactions.

The log files would then be manually imported into our financial system.

Thanks in advance.

There is no web service or XML data flow destination, unfortunately. You could write a custom destination component to call your web service.|||

Not entirely true... You can stick a Web service task in a foreach loop that spins through the recordset. Then you merely map the appropriate variables to the Web service.

This is done on the control flow, though, so you'd need to perhaps stage your data first in the data flow and then select it with an Execute SQL task to load up your ADO recordset.|||My bad, I was focused on the data flow. Good approach.|||Great info! I'll look into that.

Can table1 in example below get updated by another process while the transaction is in pro

I am afraid that just after @.statusOfEmployee is retrieved from table1, but before table2 is updated, someone else (a second user) calls this same stored procedure and changes the @.statusOfEmployee value. This would create aninconsistentupdate of table2 by first user, since the update of table2 'might' not have gone ahead if the latest value of @.statusOF Employee was used. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME WITH THIS SITUATION AND HOW I CAN BE SURE THAT ABOVE DOES NOT HAPPEN SINCE MULTIPLE USERS WILL BE HITTING THIS STORED PROCEDURE?

declare @.status int
begin tran
set @.status = (select statusOfEmployee from table1)
if @.@.ERROR = 0
begin
update table2
set destination = @.destination /* @.destination is an input parameter passed to the sp*/
where @.currentStatus = @.status
if @.ERROR = 0
commit tran
else
rollback tran
end
else
rollback tran

return

update table2
set destination = @.destination /* @.destination is an input parameter passed to the sp*/
where @.currentStatus = (select @.statusOfEmployee from table1)

This will only work if you have only 1 row in table1, but I'm guessing this isn't your real SP. If there can be more than 1, then you have other issues. And to answer your question, yes, it could have been updated between those statements.

|||

Sorryy. I meant a field there. I will edit it.

One question for you: If I used the original sp I mentioned in my post, then is there a danger of incosistent update as I have explained OR because the select is in a transaction, SQL Server will prevent any changes to tables being used in the transaction?

I was going to mark the ADO.Net code that calls this stored procedure as 'critical' in my C# code using lock(this) { }. That way only one user can execute this stored procedure at a time from the application, which eliminates any chances of inconsistent updates. ANYONE HAS ANY COMMENTS ON USING THIS APPROACH TO PREVENT INCOSISTENT UPDATES?

|||

I would think even with your approach, since the select and update are on different tables, there is nothing preventing another user from updating the table used in select statement. SQL Server willonlyprevent any user from updating 'table2' while this update statement is in progress.

|||

Yes, your original SP isn't multi-user safe. No, the one I gave you is. The difference is the type of locks that are requested and the duration for which they are held.

|||

So even though in your query a simple select is being executed on 'table1', SQL Server will place an exclusive lock on 'table1' row.

I thought that under default SQL Server 2000 locking (read committed), select statements will not place an exclusive lock on the row involved in select query. And if this is true, then including the 'select' within the 'update' will still allow someone else to update 'table1' before the update to 'tabl2' happens. Right or wrong?

|||

Because the select is happening within the confines of the UPDATE statement, the subquery will place a read-lock (sharing) on table1's row during the entire time the update is occuring. The update can not happen without this read-lock, and no other updates can happen to table1 while this statement has the read-lock in place.

The real issue that your prior SP had was that the read-lock on table 1 was released as soon as the SET @.var= was completed, which would allow someone to update table1 before table2 was updated. You could accomplish nearly the same thing with some of the locking hints, or changing the transaction isolation mode, but the SP won't execute as quickly as incorporating it into one statement like I did, and that means locks are being held longer than they need to be.

SET @.var=(SELECT ... WITH (HOLDLOCK) ...)

would have accomplished the same thing. If you add more steps to your transaction, then the read lock will be held until the completion of the transaction. With the combined UPDATE, the read lock is dropped when the UPDATE completes (The update lock on table2 is held until the end of the UPDATE if it's not in a transaction, or until the transaction is commited/rolled back...).

|||

Great explanation. It helped clarify an important point to me.

Thanks for that.

Can sql server run on XP Pro?

Hi could anybody advise if Microsoft SQL Server Database would run on Windows XP Professional or would I need to install some server OS first like 2000 Server? You can run SQL Server 2000 Evaluation Edition and Developer Edition on
Windows XP Professional.

Check the Url for more details:

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/evaluation/sysreqs/2000/default.asp|||Yes, it can run on XP Pro. I have done it before.|||Thanks, I have downloaded evaluation edition on XP. To Pjmcb: do you mean you run the full version on XP Pro?I can get free software from my college but they would not give it to me without Server OS(which they are out of + I would need to change OS)|||I have ran the Standard Edition of SQL Server 2000 on XP Pro and 2000 Pro, no problem.

My D drive is my cd-rom which i did not used at all during setup (i download SQLEXPR from MSDN). To make it run, i unmap my cdrom and I "subst d: c:\".
The next error was about the other database files, so i copy everything.

Finaly, SQL Express start on the command box.
There was no way to connect to it, I try osql, sqlcmd and even telnet. Nothing work, telnet only connect, the two other can not find the server.

I then stoped the sqlservr.exe, and i try starting the service. It fail with the exact same error.

I have no PDC (i'm in a workgroup).

I have tried to start the service manually several different ways. I also checked the service log on credentials and group policies.

In the event viewer, these are the errors:

Any help? I've tried re-installing about 10 times.

|||I feel the pain of all of you. I am very suprised that no one is able to solve this problem, not even Microsoft!!

I am running Windows Server 2003 R2 with SP2 installed. The server is 800 MHz, 1 GB Ram, 500 GB HDD. The preinstallation check said that it fulfilled minimum hardware requirements.

Exactly as what was stated initially in this forum, the SQL service fails to start. What's even more odd, before the installation starts, you can tell setup to not start the server automatically at the end of installation by unchecking the box for SQL server service. What makes this odd is setup actually ignores this setting and tries to start the service anyways, which forces me to hit cancel and rollback the installation.

My goal is to setup a demo of sharepoint on the server to use for a possible company intranet. It requires a database backend which normally comes with it, but sharepoint setup also crashes during installation for unknown reasons.

I would definitely like to know why none of these things work on a server OS...The server is currently acting as a DC, but I read that it doesn't matter.

Microsoft, can you please resolve this problem?! Thank you.

I'm having the same problem installing SQL Server 2005 Express on Windows XP. At the end of the installation, a message box appears stating:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup

The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually."

I have tried to start the service manually several different ways. I also checked the service log on credentials and group policies.

In the event viewer, these are the errors:

Event Type: Error

Event Category: None
Event ID: 10005

The error is (1067) The process terminated unexpectedly.

Any help? I've tried re-installing about 10 times.

|||Another user with the same problem. Windows application log says it can't write to the SQL ERRORLOG; changing the startup account to Local System gives error saying SQL trying to write to a non-existent drive. Anybody? I've cleaned the registry, retried, no luck.|||

I also updated all my windows components, shut off my antivirus & spyware, made sure group policies & services were at default settings.

I was installing using the SQL Express default settings and even tried it from the administrator account.

Everything appeared to be installing correctly until it tried to start the service, then it failed and rolled back the installation every time.

I am not having any other problems on my computer. All the other Visual Studio 2005 Express programs installed flawlessly.

Can not start Service on install

Hi,

I've been looking for the past 4 hours why SQL Express doesn't install on my Windows XP home and Pro.

Almost at the end of install, the setup try to start the SQL Server Service. I can press either retry or cancel. Retry simply show again this message box, cancel rollback the last step (sql engine setup).

While the setup is at this message box, i've look around my system to see what can be wrong.
When i start the service manualy, it stop immediatly. But, if i copy paste the command line "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Binn\sqlservr.exe" -sSQLEXPRESS
into a "cmd", it told me it can not open file "mssqlsystemresource.mdf" located on "d:\windows\temp\mkmaster_result\".

Both system are clean from other beta (only .NET 2 and SQL Express). But i did try C# express, which is uninstalled and did not cause any other problem on install.

I've look at a lot of place on internet, no install failure where identical to my problem.
I have no PDC (i'm in a workgroup).
Both system are Windows XP French, one is Home Ed. the other is Professional Ed.
The home Ed. have MSVS .NET 2003, the Pro Ed. have MSVS 6.

So here the logs:

I have tried to start the service manually several different ways. I also checked the service log on credentials and group policies.

In the event viewer, these are the errors:

The error is (1067) The process terminated unexpectedly.

Any help? I've tried re-installing about 10 times.

|||Another user with the same problem. Windows application log says it can't write to the SQL ERRORLOG; changing the startup account to Local System gives error saying SQL trying to write to a non-existent drive. Anybody? I've cleaned the registry, retried, no luck.|||

I was installing using the SQL Express default settings and even tried it from the administrator account.

Thank you.

Events Logs: I'll copy some event that are related to the issue.
Application:
The SQL Network Interface library could not deregister the Service Principal Name (SPN) for the SQL Server service. Error: 0x54b. Administrator should deregister this SPN manually to avoid client authentication errors.

System:
Le service SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) dpend du service Ouverture de session rseau qui n'a pas pu dmarrer en raison de l'erreur : %%0
(SQL Service Server depends on "network session opening" which could not start due to error %%0)

Cet ordinateur est configur en tant que membre d'un groupe de travail, et non en tant que membre d'un domaine. Il n'est pas ncessaire d'excuter le service Accès rseau dans cette configuration.
(This computer is setup as a workgroup computer and not as a domain member. It's useless to run Network Access in this configuration)

--
With all these informmation, i don't know where to go. The Network Session service is not start and could not be start (lsass.exe). But, it is in my Process in Task Manager. Is it started or not? But since it's a Domain tool, i don't need it.

In the Requirement, I can not see anywhere we need to be on a Domain. Plus, it's impossible to connect a Win XP Home to a Domain, Win XP Home is supported.

I think i write all information i have on this failure.

Thanks,

Robert.

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?LinkID=20476&ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&ProdVer=9.00.3042.00&EvtSrc=setup.rll&EvtID=29503&EvtType=sqlsetuplib%5cservice.cpp%40Do_sqlScript%40sqls%3a%3aService%3a%3aStart%40x42b

BUTTONS:

Cancel

I have tried to start the service manually several different ways. I also checked the service log on credentials and group policies.

In the event viewer, these are the errors:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MsiInstaller
Event Category: None
Event ID: 10005
Date: 07/17/2007
Time: 11:16:28 PM
Description:
Product: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition -- Error 29503. The SQL Server service failed to start. For more information, see the SQL Server Books Online topics, "How to: View SQL Server 2005 Setup Log Files" and "Starting SQL Server Manually."
The error is (1067) The process terminated unexpectedly.

Any help? I've tried re-installing about 10 times.|||Another user with the same problem.

Thank you.

Exact same problem here, can't install because it can't start the service and then rolls back the install:
