Can V run DTS from an remote machine?

Hi,
i have developed an web-database enabled application, wherein the admin will be importing the data from a remote machine to the server.
Is it possible to run the DTS remotely?
Also, is there need to install the sqlserver in the remote machine on which the admin is working ? i mean to say, other than server, do i need to install sqlserver on the remote machine too..
Thanx in advance

If you are on the same Network you register the server and it becomes local to you and if needed you remote into the server and do anything it feels local. To use DTS remotely you need SQL Server Agent installed with a service account. Try the links below for configurations. Hope this helps.

|||Hello Kiran,
It looks as if solution of problem is not clear to you also or you are moving in wrong direction .

wherein the admin will be importing the data from a remote machine to the server.
With the help of DTS it is not possible.
Possible solution can be uploading the data to server through webapplication and then calling DTS through stored procedures in webapplication.
Other solution can be uploading files using DTS FTP task and then performing transfromation operations.

|||Hi,
thanx for the reply. i will try it out|||Hi Bhatia,
hmm, i think, the way i have put my question sounds confusion.
Lemme clearly explain u what the prob is .
I have developed an webenabled application using ASP.NET,C#,SQL server 2000. The application is all about having students database-all the universities.
Here, the admin will have the privilege to upload students data onto the database and all other users can only retrieve it.
I want to design the application such a way that, admin can upload the data onto the server remotely, mean to say, he can do that, signing in from any remote machine.
While uploading, admin should access the datatables of the server, import the data from the current machine(remote machin thru which hes signed in) onto the server.
How can i design this...hmm, how can i call the DTS of the server, signing in from the remote machine.
Hope this explains better..
|||Hello Kiran,
You must first upload the student data to the server through web application.
For uploading tutorial visit this link
http://www.aspheute.com/english/20000802.asp?PrinterFriendly=True

After the file is uploaded to server then only you can transform file to the server.
you have to create DTS package for transformation and stored procedure for calling DTS package.
1.Create a new package
Right click on package window > Package properties
-Set Global Variables
SourceText String
DestTable String

-Now Drag and drop Text file (Source) and Microsoft OLE DB Provide for SQL Server(Destination).
Connect them with Transform data task.(Add dummy data in text file and SQL Server Table to check it is working fine).
-Now add Dynamic Properties Task from Task.
Edit it.
Now set property
1.Connections > Text File(Source) > Data Source
Set Global Variables (SourceText variable)
2.Tasks > DTS Tasks > DestinationObjectName
Set Global Variables (DestTable variable)
Your workflow will set in this way
Dynamic Properties Task --->On Success--> TextFile(Source)-->Data Transfrom Task-->Microsoft OLE DB Providefor SQL Server(Destination).

Step2. Create stored procedure that will call this DTS package from web application.
CREATE Procedure DtsTransform
@.ServerName nvarchar(30),
@.UserName nvarchar(30),
@.Password nvarchar(30),
@.DtsName nvarchar(250),
@.SourceFile nvarchar(200),
@.DestTable nvarchar(200)

AS
DECLARE @.ERROR int -- For Hold Error Number
DECLARE @.CMD varchar(1000) -- Dts Run Command
DECLARE @.DtsPassword varchar(30)

BEGIN

SET @.ERROR = 0

SET @.CMD = 'dtsrun /S '+@.ServerName+' /U '+@.UserName+' /P'+@.Password+' /N '+@.DtsName +' /A SourceText:8='+ @.SourceFile +'/A DestTable:8='+ @.DestTable
EXECUTE @.ERROR = master..xp_cmdshell @.CMD
SELECT @.ERROR = COALESCE( NULLIF ( @.ERROR, 0 ), @.@.ERROR )

END
RETURN @.ERROR

GO

Hope this will solve your problem.
|||That is not correct a DTS package running with SQL Server Agent populates online back with deposits collected from AS400. The job runs for about three hours. I ran Profiler on it and watched SQL Server Agent deposit 50 transactions every three to five seconds. Search this forum I helped some one less than two months ago. If you cannot do it does not mean it is not possible. In the 1990s I started posting the need to install SQL Server Agent with service account for Replication, today click on the Replication Wizard and you will get a message telling you to do so. Technology is there for you to explore and improve. Hope this helps.|||Hi Bhatia,
well i am very new to DTS, and i dint get that DTS package transformation. I do know how to upload the file though.
can u plz explain me whats the DTS package for and how to create that?
thanks in advance
|||Hi,
i am totally confused with this. What r u trying to explain?
Thanks inadvance|||Hello Kiran,
You cannot develop all this in one flow.
Start with uploading .
See if you are able to upload student data or not .
After this shift to DTS part.( for transformation of text file to Sql server database).

Can the SQL Server 2005 be installed on Windows 2003 SP1?

I recently attempted to install Windows 2003 SP1 on a machine on which someone had previously installed SQL Server 2005. The build number for the SQL Server 2005 installation is 9.0.1116. (BTW, which CTP is this build number?)

The installation of the service pack seemed to go okay, but I soon got calls from users reporting that they could not log in to the instance. I investigated, and discovered that the SQL Server service had not started. We were unable to start the service, and had to remove SP1.

This was the message I found in Event Viewer:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: SQLDUMPER
Event Category: None
Event ID: 5000
Date: 8/15/2005
Time: 10:30:30

My questions are:
1) What happened?
2) Can I install the current CTP on Windows 2003 SP1?

Hi,

That version corresponds to the April CTP of SQL Server.

You could log that as a bug in Product Feedback:
http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/productfeedback/

Regards,

Thanks for the reply,
Ken|||The Build number for June CTP needs is 9.0.1187. I have it running successfully on machine with Win2003 server with SP1. I installed SQL Server 2005 after installing SP1.

I installed the June CTP on Windows 2003 SP1 and I am up and running. Thanks.

Can SQL2000 & SQL2005 co-exist on the one server?

i realise you can have both SQL2000 & SQL2005 Client software co-existing on one (developement) machine.

but i cant seem to find a definitive answer on whether i can install both complete databases on a server?

we are currently building a new development server and would like to install both version on it if possible?

Cheers,
Craig

You can install both. You'd have to have an instance name, however.

ie. servername\sql2005

I think it's less confusing if you put both servers on separate instances..

instead of

sql2000: servername
sql2005: servername\sql2005

use

sql2000: servername\sql2000
sql2005: servername\sql2005

this way you know what environment you're pointing to..

Can SQL tools be installed from server install?

Good day,

Can SQL Server tools (QA, EM) can be installed on a client machine from
a full SQL Server installation on a server? I can't find the CD.

Thanks for your time.

Probably, but you would have to spend some time registering DLLs etc,
and it would be quite messy.

So finding the CD is a good idea.

If you are an MSDN Universal Subscribler, you can get it from MSDN
Downloads.

And if you don't have it, you can download it from www.microsoft.com.

There might be two issues:
1) License may not permit connecting to production environments.
2) It used to be that service packs can be applied to EvalEdition. I
don't know if this still is the case.

From what I understand of the installation process, and the fact that
Express *wants* to be in a seperate named instance, I'd guess it'd be
fine. But at the end of the day, the fastest way to find out is to
suck it and see...

can sql 7 and sql 2000 coexist on the same machine

I have sql server 2000 installed on my laptop. I use this laptop for demos
in standalone disconnected mode. I need to install a relatively old piece
of software which was developed for sql 7.
My question is if I can safely install sql 7 server on the laptop without
conflict with the already installed sql 2000 server?
Sincerely,
Zvi Weiss
You can install SQL 7 and SQL 2000 on the same machine, but only if SQL 7 is
the default instance and SQL 2000 is a named instance.
The easiest is probably to install the database for your piece of software
on SQL 2000 and set the database to 70 compatibility mode.
If that doesn't work, I guess that you have already installed SQL 2000 as
the default instance on your laptop, so you would have to change that to a
named instance. The most "straightforward" way would be to detach the
databases from SQL 2000, uninstall SQL 2000, install SQL 7, install SQL 2000
as a named instance and reattach the databases.

Can not see server components during setup

Hi,
I an trying to install Reporting Service 2000 on my machine, it has Windows
XP with SP1, SQL 2000 Developer edition with SP3a, Visual Studio.Net 2003.
This is the first time I try Reporting Services, I am going to make my
machine a Report Server and for reports authoring.
However during the setup, I only see Client Components, Server Components do
not show at all. I even read rssetup, chm on the CD, it confirms that there
are server components to be installed.
What am I missing here?
TIAYou need to have IIS installed for server components to be installed. XP
does not have it running by default. RS is a asp.net application.

can not run Reports in the browser.. ?

I'm running Reporting Services on aWinXP machine. The reports are working
through the Preview screen but not in the browser.
When I type in the URL, http://localhost/Reports/ I get error msg:
"The Report server cannot open a connection to the report server database. A
connection to the database is required for all requests and processing. ..."
"SQL Server does not exist or access denied."
SQL server version: SQL 2000 (Developer Edition on Winodws NT 5.1 Build
2600: Service Pack 1)
Also, the following services are running: DTC, Report Server, MSSQLSERVER,
RPC.
Any idea what could be causing this error?
Thanks. One thing to understand. When you are in Visual Studio and do a preview, it
is rendering it locally. It does not use any server components (IIS, SQL
Server (if the data you are reporting off of is in SQL Server then it needs
a connection to the data that is used but RS uses SQL Server for as well -
for instance it stores the reports in SQL Server). So, just the fact that
you can do a preview has nothing to do with there being a valid install of
all the server components.
First, make sure that the configuration you are trying for is even possible.
This link tells you the different versions of RS and what is required for
the client (i.e. to develop reports) and what is required for the server to
run.

I had the exact configuration running on a Windows 2000 box. We had to
rebuild a new box with WinXP on it. and getting this
"rsReportServerDatabaseUnavailable" error.
Earlier the ReportServer web service could not be started due to a logon
failure error. The service was set to run under a different domain user . So
changed the logon to use the "local system account". Then the ReportServer
web service could be started. But still get the
"rsReportServerDatabaseUnavailable" error.
Do i need to run the rsocnfig utility too to repair the new credentials (i.e
with local system account) .
Any experts, pls help. Its really urgent.

the Report Server. Finally, fater much troubleshooting, I re-installed RS
and with proper configuration the link to the Report Server is working.
Thanks for all your help.

can not load xpstar.dll

hi,
i have sql server sp3 running upon win 2000 adv server sp 4. the server is
configured for merge replication with another machine with same
configuration (sql server sp3 running upon win 2000 adv server sp 4). few
days back i recieved this error when i was trying to connect SQL server
remotely from one macine to the other.
Microsoft SQL-DMO(ODMC SQL State:42000) Error 0: cannot load the dll
xpstar.dll, or one of the DLLs it refferences. Reason: 126(the specified
module could not be found)
even if i could connect, i get the same error upon almost every activity on
the remote sql server. i found no reasonable solution to the problem on the
internet. finnally i uninsalled the sql server and then installed fresh sql
server and sp3. the problem was resolved. but afetr few days, i m facing
the same problem back again. i have repeated the same course of action.
i need to know any why this is happning so i could reach to the root of the
problem. installing back the sql server is not an optimal solution. need
help and fast.
thanx in advance.
Atif Chowhan
When you check you will find that xpstar.dll is actually there and loaded. The file missing is probably shfolder.dll. This folder resides in %systemRoot%\system32, copy it from any other server.
